Use of Daylighting and Mental Ray visualization in Revit Architecture 2009



Revit Architecture 2009 includes the Mental ray Render engine which allows to obtain realistic daylighting images comparable to 3ds Max.

1. Open Revit Model
2. Open View>Rendering dialog
3. Set the quality to draft, best, custom, etc. It is a good idea to try the draft version first to check everything is alright
4. Set the lighting scheme according to the desired lighting condition. For simple daylighting, choose 'Sun Only'.
5. Set the sun parameters based on location, date and time
6. Set Sky conditions (clear, hazy)
7. Hit Render
8. You may adjust the exposure after the render is done
9. Export the file to save as image

Observations


The images produced through this process are comparable with the ones rendered in 3ds Max, in terms of quality and time, as it saves time of exporting and importing. For general daylighting purpose, this is a good option. However, for advanced graphics and more controls on image size, camera position, and lens effects, one might still prefer 3ds Max.
